Giant Pinwheels in the Sky: Metaphors for Life

Windmills, to me, are like giant pinwheels in the sky. They come in all sorts of shapes and varieties. They are in all sorts of conditions. Some are new and shiny while others are old, rusty, in disrepair, and in need of missing parts. Some have no wheel at all — the wheel long gone onto some other life journey. Some spin slowly, more deliberately. Others more furiously, deliriously. Some stand tall and proud. Others are more listless and tired.
All windmills are life-givers.
They bring water and electricity to farms and ranches all over the landscape. As such they are female, named with female names, and referred to by “she.”
This beautiful windmill is the perfect example of grace and dignity.
A little weathered but strong and steady nonetheless.
Eventually she spun for me, showing me the bullet holes in her wing, and her rusted blades.
She spun ever so slowly but, nevertheless, as she spun, she clearly said to me “…don’t forget me…I’m still here…”
Disparate Parts Fit Together To Create Strength and Uniqueness
This interesting windmill combined the old with the new — a new wheel and generator atop an old stand and ladder. At first the two sets of disparate parts seemed like misfits but it was soon apparent that they were right for each other.
The wheel spun and spun in the winter wind while being ably supported by the strength of the tall tower.
I couldn’t help but notice the ladder on this windmill against the striated sky.
Ladders are a wonderful part of the windmill’s symbolism.
You’re either on your way up or on your way down.
You decide.
This windmill stood resolute, calm, and unnerved like a regal Queen high atop a hill overlooking an expansive valley of farmland.
Her presence was reassuring and unwavering.
She, with her shiny blades and painted wing, spun with quiet strength for all to see.
There was no question this girl could handle the wind in her face.
Have you had a windmill encounter lately?
Next time you see a windmill think about her symbolism for life, energy, strength, and perseverance.
As she spins, let her energy waft into yours. Just like a windmill — or a giant pinwheel in the sky — the wind animates you and gives you life, energy and power.
That wind is your Inner Voice.
Look. Listen. Feel.

Nice images. How did you manage to get them?
Here’s to being a conduit for wonder and discovery.
Hi JC! Wow, thanks for taking the time to look around my site. Glad you like the windmill pictures. A very good friend of mine spent the day with me photographing these beautiful symbols — it was easy. We just pulled off the side of the road whenever we saw a “giant pinwheel in the sky” and started exploring. I hope you can feel the breeze!
